The traditional ending of a modern hero鈥檚 story is very similar to the ending of the Grendel and Beowulf fight. The hero is victorious and has defeated his enemy, while the rest of the society is joyous and forever commemorates the hero鈥檚 triumph. However, Beowulf continues on after the ending of Grendel, and goes on to defeat Grendel鈥檚 mother. It is not until Beowulf is much older and his strength is weakened that Beowulf faces his most difficult battle yet. An infuriated dragon searches for Beowulf鈥檚 kingdom with full intention to destroy it in search of a stolen treasure. Once Beowulf鈥檚 hall is destroyed, he makes the traditional vow for revenge. Once he reaches the dragon鈥檚 lair, Beowulf and the dragon fight in another violent and gruesome battle. His army runs from him, which makes him vulnerable to the dragon鈥檚 attack: 鈥淭hen the wound dealt by the ground-burner earlier had began to scald and swell; Beowulf discovered deadly poison suppurating inside him鈥?Beowulf 2712-2714)
