In the late 1960's in Australia, I owned a Triumph Spitfire adapted for road racing (bored out, shaved head, Webers, suspension modifications, etc.). It would not run on ordinary gasoline / petroleum. It demanded Methylbenzene / Toluene as fuel. And that fuel was available at quite a lot of gas stations in Australia in those days, so I could use the car for road trips as well as for racing.
But it was a fierce fuel that required careful handling. Highly explosive, and even a drop on the paintwork would eat right through to the metal.
Is it still used for racing, or any other automotive application, today?
Is Toluene (methylbenzene) still used as racing fuel?hijack this
you can buy belray octane booster from most car parts dealers Halfords also sell something similar, these used to contain toluene. It was illegal to put it into the fuel on the forecourt of the garage but you are able to add it as an addative.

Toluene is a god-awful carcinogen! I'd keep as far away from it as I could.
